PhD Funded Fellowship at University College Cork in Cork, Ireland
Job Description:
The School of Biological, Earth and Environmental Sciences, University College Cork, Ireland, is offering a PhD position financed by the Crawford Hayes Fund in the area of marine invertebrate biology. This award will include payment of annual EU fees and a yearly stipend (circa 1600 euro p/a) for 3 years with a possibility to extend to four years. The project will be supported by a budget for consumables, equipment and travel. Minimum requirements for applicants will be an upper 2nd class Honours degree in an appropriate biological discipline. Relevant professional experience or relevant MSc degree experience will be an advantage. While this PhD programme will be largely research based, various graduate courses will be available.
The topic of this PhD study will be to Investigate the use of pre and probiotics to promote the performance and health of cultured marine invertebrates. Details of the facilities and the project follow below. The research programme will be jointly supervised by staff in the Aquaculture and Fisheries Development Centre, University College Cork (Professor Gavin Burnell and Dr Sarah Culloty), and The Aquaculture and Fish Nutrition Research Group, Plymouth University (Professor Simon Davies and Dr Daniel Merrifield). Dr Joe Kerry (The School of Food and Nutritional Sciences, University College Cork) will provide support and collaboration and Dr Valeria Matranga (CNR - Institute of Biomedicine and Molecular Immunology, Palermo, Italy) will provide training.
Requirements – Qualifications/Experience:
Suitably qualified persons are asked to submit a completed CV with transcripts of their previous degree/s, names and contact details of two professional referees. In addition, applicants should also explain in a cover letter why you wish to undertake this PhD and how they might investigate this topic within the boundaries of available resources.
Salary: circa 16,000 euro p/a
